Time for New Shoes!
What that means for me – a trip to Performance Running Outfitters! Running has been a huge part of my weight maintenance over the years. When I first started running there wasn’t much in the way of specialty running stores in the Milwaukee area. And fitting was little more than the salesperson pressing on the great toe to see if there was room. At that time, taking the shoes for a spin meant running back and forth in the store or on the sidewalk in front of the store – if they let you. Now, all that has changed.
No Fear Fitting
I forget exactly when I walked into the Brookfield Performance Running Outfitters location (back then, it was their only location) – a co-worker had told me about a running store owned by a great local couple – Trae and Jessica Hoepner (who I still haven’t met). I brought in my old running shoes which had my custom orthotics – I had an overuse Achilles tendinitis during my first marathon. After looking at my old shoes and asking a few questions, the salesperson disappeared to the back room for a few minutes and reappeared with a towering stack of shoes. Without hesitation or fear, he yanked the smelly orthotics out of my shoes and placed them subsequently into each pair of shoes that he had brought out. And, I didn’t just walk around the store or jog in place to see how they felt. He videotaped me running on the treadmill and picked out the best few pairs based on slow motion replay and analysis.
When my daughter was running cross country, it was out to the Oconomowoc Performance Running Outfitters location. She had, unfortunately, inherited my flat feet and overpronation. Not only did the salesperson bring out a stack of shoes for her to try, but tried three different inserts to find the right combination to correct her poor genetic disposition.
Specialty Shoes and Apparel? You Bet!
The following spring, it was track season and time for my daughter to get track spikes, so off again to Performance Running Outfitters. When they say “Outfitters” they really mean it. Everything that you would ever need to run, train, race, or recover – they have it. The greatest thing – these guys use what they sell. It’s not like a big box sporting goods store where the same guy selling you golf clubs is giving you advice on cold weather running gear.
But I Don’t Run
That’s OK too. The first sentence on their website reads, “Performance Running Outfitters is a locally owned specialty running store for all levels of runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts” (bold added by me). At Strong Weight Loss, when I refer my patients to Performance Running Outfitters, I know they will be treated well. How do I know this? Because my patients come back and tell me how great their experience was and how special they felt with the level of service they received even though they were “only a walker.” It’s no wonder they’ve been voted #1 on WISN’s A-list every year since 2007.
