Lazy People Don’t Cook Much
How many times have you said, “I really need to eat at home more often?” For me its at least a couple of times per month. My problem, I’m lazy. So when these “we’ll deliver ingredients for gourmet dinners to your house” companies started popping up, I jumped on board one – for like three weeks. It took me an hour to peel, dice, chop, pluck (ok, I didn’t need to pluck), saute, broil, make a cherry tomato rose garnish… By the end of three weeks, I had it. Yes, the food was good. Yes, it was more variety than what I usually cook. But after a day of work and usual after work activities – it was much easier to stop off at the local watering hole to share a burger and a beer with my wife. At the end of week three, I had four of the nine meals left that they had sent me.
Cooking for Lazy People
Scrolling through FaceBook one day, I saw and an Ad for Terra’s Kitchen. I’m not sure what caught my eye about this ad, but what sold me was step two on their website, “We chop & deliver” (bold and italics added by me). The placement of step two was genius as well – right in the center of the screen. I looked through their site and signed up that day. They have a longer lag time between order and delivery than the other service I used (probably since they have to do more work), and I finally got my box yesterday.
The Delivery Vessel
To call the package they sent a “box” would be an insult. I got an email two days prior to the delivery date letting me know the package was sent. I was, needlessly, concerned about the freshness of the food. The Vessel (yes, I consider it necessary to elevate it to proper noun status) is sizeable, well constructed and insulated. I’m sure there is someone who could wax poetically about the Vessel and give it the description it deserves, but that ain’t me. So here are some pictures. As you can see, the box was delivered to my garage door. After emptying the Vessel it goes back outside to be picked up by some dude and whisked away from whence it came.
Nearly each ingredient came packaged in its own recyclable container (some smaller items were clumped together). Each container had a sticker that corresponded to a number on the included recipe card. The Vessel came packed with ice packs and everything felt to be adequately cooled (we’ll see what happens in the summer months). When ordering, I was concerned about the space that three meals would take up in the fridge, but, as you can see, the entire shipment fit nicely into a single drawer in my fridge – it is a huge drawer though. Now the tough part – deciding what to cook.
Time to Cook!
When my wife got home from work, I listed off the choices we had available for dinner. She chose the Cauliflower Fried Rice. This was a vegetarian meal and I, being a meatatarian, ordered a portion of shrimp to go with it.
I pulled out everything with a “225” sticker, read the entire recipe sheet, decided how to incorporate the shrimp into the whole thing then went to town. The only thing that resembled “prep work” was ricing the cauliflower in the food processor. Beyond that it was opening the packages and dumping them in and out of the Wok per the instructions.
I timed the entire process which took me all of 15 minutes from the first whirr of the food processor to turning off the burner on the stove and plating (their recipe card said 20 minutes – I feel like such an overachiever)
The End Result
Here is a picture of my end result which is not as pretty as Terra’s Kitchen’s picture – but it’s a closer representation than a fast food hamburger to their promo pictures.
But how did it taste? I, being half Japanese, have had more than my fair share of fried rice (one of the (many) reasons why I needed to lose weight in the first place). And, since losing weight, it is one thing that I truly miss. Except for the fact that the cauliflower didn’t stick together as nicely as rice and was a bit difficult to eat with chopsticks, I didn’t mind that the cauliflower was substituted for the rice. I added a bit more soy sauce and red pepper flakes to taste, but altogether it was excellent. The only thing I would do differently would be a bit different preparation of the shrimp – but if you remember, the shrimp was my addition to the dish (cooking instructions weren’t included for the shrimp, but – as I learned today – they are available on Terra’s Kitchen’s website.)
Calories and Macronutrients
Terra’s Kitchen provides the Calories, but not the macronutrients. I did a little creative input into the Lose It App to approximate the Calories listed on the recipe card to guesstimate the macronutrients.

- Ordering – going forward, I get an email on Wednesday asking me to finalize my decision on Thursday so it can be prepped, packaged, shipped and on my doorstep the following Thursday. Being a procrastinator, I may just end up with their pre arranged menu without modification more times than not.
- Delivery Vessel – So far, so good. We’ll see what the summer months bring with regard to freshness.
- Product preparation – Excellent, although my wife did mention that they sell riced cauliflower at Trader Joe’s (hint, hint Terra’s Kitchen).
- Meal Preparation – Easy and straightforward with easy to follow directions and helpful images (the image of the riced cauliflower help to prevent me from pulverizing the cauliflower into a fine dust).
- Taste – Excellent
- Cost – about $15 per meal ($10 for the Cauliflower fried rice and $5 for the shrimp)
- Calories and Macronutrients – It would be nice if Terra’s Kitchen provided the macronutrients with the recipe. Here is my take for my general weight loss patient. Total calories were in a great range for a low calorie weight loss program. Alone, the cauliflower fried rice fell a little short of the protein range I usually recommend, but with the addition of the shrimp it is in an acceptable range. Net carbs were on the upper end of what I would like to see for my weight loss patients, but if they’ve kept the carbs in check throughout the day, this would be fine.
This was the first meal that I prepared from Terra’s Kitchen. I plan on writing up more reviews as I can, but so far I’m very happy with the service and look forward to quick delicious meals prepared fresh at home.
